How to Avoid Burnout in Real Estate

release edition [012]

read time [3 minutes]

Welcome to The Multifamily Download, a weekly newsletter where I provide institutional insights to help you build an exceptional Multifamily career.

Endurance

Today, I'm pausing from my typical format and focusing on a topic that isn't discussed enough in the Real Estate business.

I believe that endurance, not intensity, intelligence, or skill, is the single most important variable for success.

Today's newsletter is an example of exactly that.

The past few weeks have been jam packed with travel, acquisitions efforts, ongoing portfolio management responsibilities, networking events, daily LinkedIn posts, investor reporting, and other generic 'fire fighting'.

Even though I've managed to publish on LinkedIn for 180 consecutive days and I have written 87 consecutive weekly newsletters, it has not been easy.

Because of the higher workload, I've been writing LinkedIn posts at stoplights on my way to the office and I'm writing this newsletter less than 1 hour before it gets published.

I share all of this as a reminder that anything above zero compounds.

Pursuing excellence is about giving your best each day, and today, this is my best.

As the end of Q1 approaches, I thought it could be helpful to pause and reflect.

Why am I in this business? What are my goals? How long am I willing to pursue those goals?

I know these are cliche questions, but the answers really do matter.

Endurance, which I define as the ability to persist over a long period of time, is the key to achieving most ambitious goals in the Real Estate business.

I believe that resting is always better than quitting, and this week, I'm taking a rest from writing my typical newsletter (which I usually do on Friday nights until well after midnight).

As I have gotten busier, my anti-goals have come back into focus to help me prioritize what really matters.

One of these anti-goals includes avoiding burnout.

If you're feeling similarly, here's what I would recommend:

1. Write your anti-goals.

What are the things that could derail or detract you from your goals above? Because of the way that our brains are wired, it's often easier to quickly determine the things that we don't want. Once there's a list of the anti-goals, simply invert them to gain clarity for your actual goals. Charlie Munger called this inverted thinking.

2. Unplug to recharge.

Stepping away is often the best way to gain healthy perspective. Spending time with friends or family, and leaving the proverbial laptop in the bag, has always helped me recharge and prepare for the next quarter or season ahead.

3. Get into service.

The business of Real Estate, and life, are more enjoyable from a place of abundance and helping other people achieve their goals, too. Reach out to your network and see who you can serve. If you're looking to grow your network, here are several people that I enjoy engaging with on LinkedIn.

Next week, I will publish my typical newsletter including a Q1 recap and some interesting trends that I'm watching.

But today?

I'm taking a step back to recharge so that I can endure over the long term.

What about you?
